Dwayne Tomah: Passamaquoddy Language Keeper

5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Biddeford Campus (Ripich Commons Room 104)
Dwayne Tomah
Free and open to the public.

Join us for an evening with Dwayne Tomah, who is the youngest native speaker of the Passamaquoddy language. He will share stories and songs recorded on wax cylinders in 1890 by anthropologist Jesse Walter Fewkes, which have recently been digitized by the Library of Congress.

Tomah will share how he and Donald Soctomah are transcribing these culturally important recordings. He will discuss the connection between language and land, and how the revitalization of language connects tribal members to their ancestors.

Co-sponsored by CAS, School of Social and Behavioral Studies, School of Arts and Humanities, School of Education, Maine Women Writers Collection, Featherman University Archives, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
